Adoption in Canada: Sharpening Our Focus

The Board of Directors of the Adoption Council of Canada held a Strategic Planning Session in Ottawa, September 6-8, 2002. This was made possible with funding from the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption.

The ongoing work of ACC is aimed at achieving three overall goals to serve the entire adoption constellation in Canada:

fewer children in Canada awaiting adoption, due to faster and more effective recruitment, matching and placement with appropriate families;
comprehensive pre- and post-adoption services available to birth and adoptive families;
open access to adoption records in all provinces and territories in Canada.

The Adoption Council of Canada is proposing to undertake four key strategies to achieve these objectives. These strategies are:

To develop strong working partnerships with the key decision-makers in the adoption process in Canada, in order to raise adoption to a higher priority among all of them, promote permanency as the goal for all children in care, strengthen the practical cooperation and sharing of knowledge among all members of the constellation over time, and advance the three broad goals set out above.
To inform, educate and link all those in the adoption constellation: families, adoptees, professionals and others; through an annual national adoption conference, an adoption journal, websites and web-based newsletter, and a new adoption list serve.
To diversify the funding base of the ACC.
To develop the infrastructure and capacity of the ACC.
