Experience what a day in the life of a child or youth in care is like!

On any given day here in Ottawa,  there are about 450 children and youth living in the care of the Children's Aid Society of Ottawa.

Most of those children and youth will return home to their families, with the supports they need. Another 50 or so children will be adopted or find permanent homes with extended family members or friends. Some youth will grow up in foster or group homes.

Another 150 youth between 16 and 20 receive financial support from the province and services from CAS; but most will age out of the child welfare system, here in Ottawa, without a family.

Too many of these children and youth in care are First Nations, Inuit or Metis.

On June 16, 2017, we cordially invite you to participate in Journey Home - a guided bus tour of our community that will help you understand what it's like for these children and youth when they come into foster care and leave their families and all that is familiar behind.

You will hear stories from the experts: young people who are still in the system, who have found permanent families, or who have aged out of care. You'll also hear from social workers, foster/adoptive parents, educators, child/family law experts, and homelessness and mental health advocates about their roles in the child welfare system.

Journey Home will showcase the services available for the most vulnerable children and youth in our community - our children. After travelling along the route these children and youth take during this critical period in their lives, you will better understand the work the Children's Aid Society and its partners, including the Adoption Council of Canada, are doing to help. You'll also be able to network and connect with people to discuss ways Ottawa's children and youth could benefit from increased collaboration and support.

We know that YOU, as respected leaders in our community with a vested interest in protecting, supporting and encouraging the healthy development of children and youth, hold the key to establishing effective solutions for the most vulnerable children in our community. We know what you will learn with you on this journey will stay with you as you return to your roles in the community.

Please register below if you'd like to attend. This will ensure that we save a seat on the bus, and lunch for you!

We look forward to guiding you on our Journey Home!
